Download the 32 or 64 bit version and install it then visit the Windows update site and get the current version of WUP just click on the correct version for XP Windows XP Service Pack 3 for IT professional ....

I installed what you recommended and after that updates are working from the microsoft site and also with automatic updates. Ireceivean error stating I need to install SP3. Apparently the version of the Windows Update Program provided with XP SP2 does not have access to the Windows Update Service any more.
